Year 4 - Digestive System

The children in Year 4 have been having a lot of fun in the last few weeks in science investigating teeth and the human digestive system.
They began by looking at their own teeth in a mirror. The children learnt that they have different kinds of teeth which perform different functions. They have incisors for biting and cutting, canines for ripping and tearing, premolars and molars for grinding and crushing food.
Next, Year 4 carried out an investigation to find out about the human digestive system. The digestive process begins in our mouth. We bite, crush and grind our food into smaller pieces helped by the saliva in our mouth. Our food then travels down the oesophagus into our stomach (we used a plastic bag to represent the stomach). Inside the stomach our food mixes with acid. Once our food is in a more liquid form it moves through the small and large intestine. For this part of the investigation, we used a pair of tights!  The intestines remove all the nutrients needed by our body. Eventually, the waste food leaves our body as poo! (the children particularly enjoyed this part!) Year 4 are finding science great fun and really enjoyable.
