Year 2 are Visited by an Owl
Owl Visit in Year 2
We have been reading the story ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ in English and on Monday, Year 2 were very lucky to receive a visit from Shane and his birds of prey from the Kielder Birds of Prey Centre. He brought in different owls including a barn owl (like the owl Plop from our story) and a European Eagle owl.
The children learned lots of facts about each of the owls including what they like to eat and why they have different coloured eyes. Shane was even kind enough to let each child have a turn stroking and holding one of the owls. The children wore a special protective glove so the owl’s talons did not scratch them. They commented on how soft the owl’s feathers were.
To finish off our visit, Shane brought out a Turkey Vulture. The children were very impressed by his large wings. They learned that he eats animals that are already dead and keeps himself cool by weeing down his leg!
The children really enjoyed the visit and learned lots of facts about owls and birds of prey.
