Read Write Inc.
Dear Parents
We believe that reading is the most important life skill we can teach our children. It opens up a world of opportunities and is the key to learning. Once children have mastered the early reading skills they can go on to explore their interests, develop confidence and independence and really enjoy the magical world that books can provide.
As a school we are constantly looking for ways we can support children to develop their reading skills as soon as they can. We have recently invested in a new reading scheme called Read Write Inc. Read Write Inc is a scheme developed to teach children to decode in a consistent, systematic way. All staff have received training and children are assessed regularly to ensure they are being taught at exactly the right level for them. Lessons are taught daily and are planned to support the children to develop their reading and writing skills so that they can become independent learners. Once children are at this level, they no longer require the Read Write Inc lessons. We have used the scheme since October and have already seen a huge amount of progress with 96% of children being moved up a group within the first half term.
This term school have purchased a large number of high quality reading books which accompany the scheme. These books are very expensive but vital to ensuring the system works as it should. From Monday, the children will read the book in their group, it will then be sent home so that they can read them with you. It is recommended that the book is read three times in total as it helps the children to become confident and fluent readers. It will also provide a lovely opportunity for you to share a book with your child and see how well they are progressing with their reading. Please write a short comment and sign their reading record whenever your child reads with you. We ask that you please look after the books carefully. When not being read, please keep them in the book bag and ensure they are returned to school every day. Unfortunately, if books are lost and do not come back to school we will not be able to replace them and will have to ask parents to reimburse the cost of the book which is £5.00.
World Book Day yesterday was a lovely opportunity to celebrate the joy of books and it was evident to see how much the children are enjoying their reading. Please look at our website to see some of the pictures. We are delighted with how much Read Write Inc is supporting the development of early reading skills and are excited for you work with us on this. Videos will be posted on the website so that you can see how the books are used in school. We look forward to hearing about how the home reading is going and seeing the progress the children will make.
Thank you for your continued support.
