Progress in the Garden...

Hi everyone

We are now in our third week back at school and life is very busy. The children have settled really well and are enjoying their new classes. Thanks for all of your support in helping us to keep things running smoothly. We all look forward to an exciting year ahead, hopefully without any disruptions.

This year we are hoping to develop the outdoor area so that the children can really make the most of outdoor learning. We know that the great outdoors is beneficial for both physical and mental health. Children love being outside and learn so much without even realising they’re learning. Being outdoors is an opportunity for children to learn life skills and to develop their language. It is also brilliant for building confidence and self esteem. At Canning Street we are lucky enough to have substantial grounds and we have been working on ways to get the best possible use out of them. We are planning for all of our children to be able to use the area regularly but first we have some hard work to do!

Some of you may remember we had a school garden built a number of years ago. The idea was for each year group to have responsibility for a raised bed in which they could grow their own plants. Unfortunately, priorities took our time and attention elsewhere and the beds became horribly overgrown.  The area became neglected over the past year and was in desperate need of some care and attention. Mr McDonald and Mrs Curry have worked hard to repair and paint fences, tidy up the area and have taken on the back breaking task of weeding and digging over the raised beds. These will soon be ready for the children to do the more relaxing work of planting seeds!  The transformation has been quite dramatic and we will soon be growing our own plants which the children will be able to care for themselves.

Thanks so much to all involved for their hard work. We will keep you updated on its progress.
