How Parents Can Help Their Child to Read

We want all children to become successful readers and enjoy reading.  You can help your child do this by;

  • Share stories and books with your child
  • Read everyday with your child (5 to 10 minutes) - add a comment in the reading record and ensure your child brings their book bag to school everyday.
  • Discuss what you are reading, ask questions such as 'what do you think might happen next?', 'what was your favourite part?'.
  • Visit the library
  • Set an example - Show your child that you enjoy reading
  • Encourage your child to read everything - street signs, names of shops, menus, labels
  • Give your children books as gifts/rewards (you could use our book recommendations for ideas)
